A Brief History of Corner Brook United Church

1876, 1898, 1906, 1925, 2025

Corner Brook United Church traces its earliest roots back to May 1876 with the arrival of Rev David Creelman from the Presbytery of Halifax. A church/school was built on the shore at Birchy Cove (Curling) and the Bay of Islands Presbyterian church was officially consecrated on July 25, 1877. By 1898 a new church building in Corner Brook was constructed near the current location of City Hall.

Methodists had also been active in the Bay of Islands since the 1870’s, initially making little headway. In 1906 a ‘school chapel’ was built at Humbermouth, and soon a church was opened on Humber Road, beside where All Hallows RC church is now located.

In 1925 both Humber Methodist and Corner Brook Presbyterian joined the new United Church of Canada – the latter congregation renaming itself First United. Humber United moved to Clarence Street in 1956, while First United used several buildings before constructing the current church between West and Park streets.

In the centennial year of the United Church of Canada the two congregations amalgamated to form Corner Brook United Church. Through many changes in name and location, in 2026 we will give thanks to God for 150 years of ministry.
